VA to Grant Nearly $16 Million for Adaptive Sports Participation

WASHINGTON (February 24, 2023) — The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently announced nearly $16 million in grant funding for qualifying organizations to help Veterans and Service Members with disabilities participate in adaptive sports.

The available funding will help organizations plan, develop, manage, and implement sports and equine therapy activities for more than 13,000 Veterans and Service Members with disabilities who could benefit from adaptive sports participation.

The funding would also support life-improving programs for Veterans and training for providers, according to VA.

Adaptive sports are customized competitive or recreational sports and activities for persons with disabilities. Activities include paralympic sports, archery, cycling, skiing, hunting, rock climbing, and sky diving, which allow Veterans to rehabilitate through recreation and encourage a full and active lifestyle.

TriWest has been a long-time partner and supporter of the VA's efforts to engage organizations and programs that sponsor competitive and recreational events to improve the active lives and well-being of Veteran and Service Members with disabilities.

Adrian Atizado, TriWest Director of Government Relations, expressed TriWest’s strong support for this important VA funding that will help Veterans and Active Duty Service Members with disabilities participate in competitive and recreational sports and activities for improved health and well-being.

"At TriWest, we have a company-wide commitment to support all Veterans and Service Members in their efforts to lead full and active lives," Atizado said. "This new VA grant funding will help our nation’s Veterans and Service Members with disabilities improve their independence and quality of life. Ultimately, it will create new opportunities to participate in adaptive sports and other activities specifically suited for their enjoyment and well-being."

"TriWest is enthusiastic about this much-needed funding because it aligns with our mission and culture of serving the health and well-being of Veteran and military communities," he added.
