Suicide Prevention Month: Understanding the Connection Between Chronic Pain and Suicide Risk

PHOENIX (September 17, 2026) Throughout Suicide Prevention Month, TriWest Healthcare Alliance is proud of its commitment to spotlight important information and resources that can help improve well-being and save lives.

In our nation’s Veteran and military communities, chronic pain is a frequent and complex condition that is a recognized factor that can lead to suicide risk. In these communities, chronic pain is often due to long-term injuries from deployment, intensive training, or even performing routine military duty.

In addition to serious injury, research shows that those with long-term chronic pain have twice the risk of suicidal behavior as the general population.

During Suicide Prevention Month it is important to understand chronic pain, its challenges, and how effective treatments can help reduce suicide risk.
