TRICARE Beneficiaries: Understand the Differences Between Medical and Dental Coverage

PHOENIX (July 7, 2026) – For TRICARE beneficiaries, it isn’t always easy to determine when mouth care is a medical or dental matter.

The Defense Health Agency (DHA) wants beneficiaries to understand that knowing which coverage is appropriate can avoid unnecessary costs or care delays.

A TRICARE medical plan may cover dental care if the issue is due to an injury or medical condition, DHA explains.

The TRICARE Dental Plan (TDP) is a separate care coverage plan for active duty family members, National Guard and Reserve members, and their family members. 

A TRICARE medical plan may cover some dental care conditions requiring limited dental work, DHA adds.

Adjunctive dental care is limited treatment for a medical condition that causes a dental issue. A TRICARE beneficiary’s dentist may provide the care, but it’s a medical claim for insurance.
