Long Summer Days Can Include More Fun in the Sun and Extreme Heat

PHOENIX (July 6, 2026) – With summer in full swing, longer days are welcome, time in the sun is pleasing, but extreme heat also poses real health risks.

Thermometers in parts of the nation have been registering temperatures high enough to endanger health and survival. Unfortunately, prolonged heat waves have resulted in death for some victims, including within our nation’s Veteran population.

There is no single definition of extreme heat, but most experts describe it as temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least two days.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause serious health issues, medical emergencies, and death.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) wants military-connected individuals to be knowledgeable and aware there are precautions to prevent health risks or death due to extreme heat.
