TriWest 30-Year Anniversary: Reflecting On a Mission to Serve® Our Nation’s Military and Veteran Communities
PHOENIX (July 1, 2026) – This month TriWest Healthcare Alliance (TriWest) observes its 30-year anniversary of proudly serving our nation’s military and Veteran communities.
As an organization humbly On a Mission to Serve® for three decades, TriWest has been deeply privileged to work alongside government to help ensure that those who serve in defense of our nation receive enhanced access to the quality healthcare services they deserve.
One Core Purpose: Serving Our Nation’s Military and Veteran Communities
In 1996, TriWest launched as a company in Phoenix where its headquarters remain.
That year, TriWest was awarded its initial Department of Defense (DOD) contract to administer the TRICARE program, providing access to healthcare services for more than a million beneficiaries in the 16-state Central Region.
In 2002, TriWest was honored to receive a four-year contract extension from DOD that firmly solidified and expanded the company’s mission by serving nearly three million TRICARE beneficiaries in 21 states.
After 17 years of serving alongside DOD, in 2013 TriWest transitioned to partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to serve military Veterans.
TriWest has been privileged to serve with VA to support the healthcare needs of Veterans in 14 western states and the U.S. Pacific Territories under VA Community Care Network (CCN) Regions 4 and 5.
Serving Those That Serve: It’s Who We Are. It’s What We Do.
None of this healthcare support over the past 30 years would be possible without TriWest’s dedicated providers in the community, who have stepped up to provide excellent care to our nation’s heroes.
Our work with our community medical partners has provided military Veterans with access to a network of more than 340,000 healthcare providers, paid provider claims within four days on average, and delivered customer service support as needed.
Since January 2014, Veterans have received nearly 100 million total provider appointments from the start of TriWest’s work supporting VA community care.
Beginning in January 2025, TriWest is also privileged to partner with the Department of War to serve the healthcare needs of approximately 4.3 million active duty service members, retirees, and their family members across the 26-state TRICARE West Region.
Our TRICARE network of 775,000 community providers enhances access to care for the beneficiary population, where TriWest has paid nearly 40 million claims representing more than $11 billion in payments to providers.
Understanding the Mission and Answering the Call
From TriWest’s beginning, founder President and CEO David J. McIntyre, Jr., has guided the company through its growth and service-first culture.
Formed by a group of nonprofit health plans and university health systems, in 1995 TriWest bid on its first TRICARE contract to help serve the military community. TriWest received award of the contract in 1996, launching the company and cultivating three decades of commitment to serving our nation’s military and Veteran communities.
“As TriWest recognizes its 30-year anniversary of dedication to our nation’s active duty service members, retirees, their family members, and Veterans, we consider it a great honor and privilege to remain in service to this most deserving population,” McIntyre said.
“Through our three decades of serving those who have served, we have been privileged to work alongside the federal government as an administrator, partner, and collaborator to honor the service and sacrifice that keeps our nation protected and safe,” he added.
TriWest employs committed professionals across the country, many of whom are Veterans or military-connected family members. They understand TriWest’s customer, because they are the customer.
“At TriWest, our employees are the heart of our mission-driven work. Our corporate motto is: ‘Whatever It Takes!®’ and it succinctly captures the importance of our strong culture of service. We are deeply grateful and humbled to do the work we do for our nation’s heroes. May our work always honor those we are privileged to serve,” McIntyre emphasized.
