Suicide Prevention: TRICARE is a Partner in Mental Health Care

PHOENIX (May 16, 2025) — The Defense Health Agency (DHA) wants TRICARE beneficiaries to know that suicidal thoughts and signs can be experienced by anyone, and they are serious mental health concerns.

According to DHA, personal awareness of mental health concerns and immediate access to available support are the strongest suicide prevention tools for beneficiaries and their loved ones.

Service members, Veterans, family members, and retirees should remember mental health care and support is as crucial as physical health. Early intervention and access to support are key to addressing serious mental health concerns, DHA says.

TRICARE health plans include mental health support every step of the way for beneficiaries as an active partner in suicide prevention and intervention.

Life challenges such as finances, relationships, loneliness, and alcohol and substance misuse can sometimes prompt thoughts of suicide and self-harm. TRICARE covers mental health services to help beneficiaries and family members deal with life’s challenges, DHA emphasizes.
