Older Veterans: Learn Why It’s Never Too Late to Apply for VA Benefits

PHOENIX (June 30, 2025) — According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), many older U.S. Veterans incorrectly assume they aren’t eligible for VA health benefits due to the nature of their past service.

In many cases – and similar situations – older Veterans don’t apply for benefits because they may have served only a few years at a stateside location, VA says.

For years after leaving military service, many fully rely on their private or employer-sponsored health insurance plans instead of applying for benefits they have earned.

However, once enrolled, eligible Veterans learn they have access to annual checkups, pharmacy benefits, and other health care services, VA says.

VA even provides free medical equipment and other supplies to eligible older Veterans. These items often cost money when provided under private or employer-sponsored health care insurance.

Older Veterans should read this recent VA News article to discover why it’s never too late to sign up for VA benefits.
