Vacation from Worry
Get Care Using TRICARE Overseas Benefits

Overseas

Vacationing overseas can be a wonderful opportunity for you and your family. Wherever your travels take you, your TRICARE benefits follow.

When you have TRICARE Standard coverage, you can receive care from any host nation provider. For help finding a provider, you should contact the TRICARE Area Office (TAO) covering the region you will be visiting. Your current coverage, cost-shares and deductibles will all be the same for overseas care as they are for care inside the United States.

If you receive care, be sure to keep copies of your health care receipts. You should expect to pay up front for most services and then file a claim for reimbursement when you return home.

If you are a TRICARE Prime enrollee, you should contact the nearest TAO. You will have to contact your primary care manager or TriWest Healthcare Alliance (or your regional contactor) as soon as possible after you receive care overseas. Routine care is not normally authorized, so you should schedule any necessary routine care before your vacation.

Overseas Dental Coverage

If you have coverage under the TRICARE Dental Program, you should be able to use your benefits overseas as well. In many cases, you will have to pay for care out of pocket and then wait until after your vacation to submit claims. Claims can be submitted overseas. For information on how and where to submit claims, contact the TRICARE Dental Program.

Overseas Pharmacy Coverage

Coverage for TRICARE pharmacy benefits outside the United States is limited. It is highly recommended that you have all your prescriptions filled before traveling overseas.

Outside of U.S. territories, to fill prescriptions via mail-order, you must have an APO or FPO address, and the prescription must be written by a U.S. military provider or by a physician licensed in the United States.
