TRICARE and VA Work Together for Your Benefit
Beneficiaries who retire from active duty often have the option of seeking health care services from both TRICARE and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It is very important for veterans choosing between TRICARE and VA to compare co-payments and financial responsibilities for each program to make the best decision for their individual situation.
The following information explains when and where you may seek services at VA and non-VA facilities.
VA Medical Facility Treatment
When being treated for a service-connected condition at a VA Medical Facility, it is recommended you use your VA benefits.
If you wish to receive treatment at a VA facility and your condition is not service-connected, you may choose to use your TRICARE benefit as long as:
- The VA facility is in the TRICARE network.
- The treatment is covered by TRICARE.
Veterans who choose to use their TRICARE coverage at a VA Medical Facility must comply with TRICARE program rules.
"A very high percentage of VA facilities are in the TRICARE network," explains Kenneth Cox, Director of the Department of Defense/VA Program Coordination Office under the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Health Affairs), "but like any other provider, if the VA facility is not in the TRICARE network, TRICARE coverage is not automatic. Patients should find out the VA facility’s status in advance."
To learn if a certain VA facility is part of the TRICARE network, visit TriWest’s online provider directory at www.triwest.com or call 1-888-TRIWEST.
Treatment at a Non-VA Facility
If you are seeking care at a facility other than a VA facility, such as a military treatment facility (MTF) or a civilian provider in the TRICARE network, you may choose to use your TRICARE benefits regardless of whether the care is for a service-connected condition.
If you have additional questions about your TRICARE and VA benefits, contact TriWest at 1-888-TRIWEST or the VA at 1-877-222-VETS.
