Monthly Allotments: Who’s Eligible and How to Sign Up

Paying annual TRICARE Prime enrollment fees by automatic monthly allotment is a convenient service for many retirees. An allotment is a special payment feature which allows TRICARE enrollment fees to be paid from your military retirement check.  

Who is Eligible?

Because monthly allotment payments can only be deducted from military retirement pay, only certain individuals can select this payment option. Individuals receiving pay from one of the following agencies are eligible for monthly allotments:

If you receive military retirement pay, selecting allotments allows you to divide your annual enrollment fee into 12 monthly payments over the course of the year.

Who is not Eligible?

Beneficiaries whose survivor benefits are paid through a Survivor Benefit Annuity (both retired and active duty) or retirees who receive Veterans Administration Benefits payments instead of retirement pay are not eligible to pay by allotment.

Additionally, former spouses, including those who have not remarried, are not eligible.

How to Sign Up

You can download the Enrollment Fee Allotment Authorization Letter at www.triwest.com (Select "Online Payment" in the left-hand menu bar and select "Allotment Authorization Letter under option #3) or call 1-888-TRIWEST, select option #2 and follow the voice prompts. Be sure to have your sponsor’s Social Security Number available.

Instructions, an address indicating where to mail the Enrollment Fee Allotment Authorization Letter and the total amount of the initial three-month payment are all located on the letter. This letter also can be used to stop or change monthly allotments from the retirement pay account.
