TRICARE tips to save money
Missing a doctor’s appointment or canceling a visit at the last minute can take money out of the family checkbook. But it also prevents someone else from getting the prompt care they need and causes problems for providers.
That’s why a number of TRICARE providers within the West Region charge their patients fees for missed appointments.
TRICARE regulations don’t prevent providers from establishing their own policies regarding missed appointment fees. However, the provider must notify patients of this policy in advance and have the patient sign a formal agreement.
Most providers require that patients call to cancel or reschedule an appointment within a specific time, usually within 24 or 48 hours prior to the original appointment, and to assume financial responsibility for missing or canceling an appointment without sufficient notice.
TRICARE beneficiaries are urged to avoid these fees by rescheduling with as much notice as possible prior to their original appointment time and to learn their providers’ policies regarding missed appointments or last-minute cancellations. A small courtesy can make a big difference in someone else’s health, and can save you the cost of a missed appointment fee.
