TriWest Races for Stroke Prevention

Sound to Narrows Group

Employees of TriWest’s Northwest Hub celebrated the 35th annual Sound to Narrows Run in Tacoma, WA, by racing, cheering and supporting our Service members. The day’s festivities kicked-off with a military race at 6:45 am. TriWest’s own, Northwest Market Vice President George Cargill served as the announcer of the run. More than 600 Service members participated in the 12K TriWest-sponsored race through Point Defiance Park.

In addition to the Military Run, the day’s events, which took place in Tacoma’s Vassault Park, included a 12K run and 5K run/walk, along with several children’s races and the Mary Bridge Children’s Challenge (offered exclusively to physical therapy patients of a local children’s hospital). More than 5,300 people participated in the public events.

"Sound to Narrows is a great way for TriWest employees to get involved in an event that not only supports the members of our local military family, but shows TriWest’s commitment to wellness," said Cargill.

In all, 20 TriWest employees participated in the day’s events, from booth organizers and cheerleaders to Northwest Medical Director Dr. Jack Tornow, who ran the 12K. "It was great to participate in an event with so many of my co-workers and friends," said Field Clinical Director Kristie Reeve, who ran the 5K. "We were there to provide encouragement to each other along the way and celebrate crossing the finish line."

Proceeds from Sound to Narrows benefit stroke prevention, as the rate of strokes in Western Washington is higher than the national average, and two local hospitals (Tacoma General and Allenmore) are both in the top 5% in the country in stroke treatment outcomes.
