John J. MorrisReintegration is not a federal program, it’s a community process. A soldier, sailor airman or marine will become a productive citizen if they return to a community that welcomes them home, that makes a place for them in the workplace, that has educators who are sensitive to the educational needs of that veteran and their children, that has health care providers that will take time to understand the unique health challenges the veteran brings to that health provider. If we have clergy and social service providers and mental health providers that understand the strains that families go through when a loved one’s in a war zone; and if we have a community that’s willing to accept us and allow us to be productive in their midst, then we’ll be able to re-integrate. |
