- Loss of interest in pleasurable activities
- Lack of energy
- Difficulty sleeping, or sleeping too much
- Appetite loss or overeating
- Difficulty thinking clearly, remembering or concentrating
- Constant feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt
- Restlessness or irritability
- Thoughts of death or suicide
These symptoms can be similar to those experienced during times of grief after the death of a loved one. Here's the difference: in depression, these feelings arise without such a loss, or they last much longer than the usual cycle of grief.
Reach Out for Help--It's OK to Ask
Remember that everyone feels down sometimes. But if you experience some of the symptoms listed above for longer periods of time, talk to your doctor or a loved one for support.
You may also be able to talk with a licensed counselor, privately and from your own home, through TriWest Online Care. Online Care offers non-medical counseling via phone, Web or chat for general life issues such as stress management, relationship problems and self-esteem issues.
Pursue Hobbies and Interests
Join a scrapbooking club, softball league or exercise class. Go bowling, golfing, or hiking. Get out of the house and involve yourself in activities that interest you. This can have a positive impact on your life.
Prepare for Stressful Events
The anniversary of a loved one’s death, the holiday season, and other periods in life can be difficult. Prepare yourself emotionally for these times by confiding in a loved one, meeting with a counselor, and writing how you may feel during these events. Also write or discuss how you plan to overcome symptoms of depression, should they arise.
