Diabetes Support Available by Phone

TRICARE beneficiaries with diabetes can get answers and support by phone.

TriWest Healthcare Alliance’s Population Health Improvement Department offers a call-in support group forum for beneficiaries enrolled in the Condition (Disease) Management Program.

“People who have had diabetes for a long time have expressed a need for a forum where they can discuss their feelings about having diabetes,” said Population Health Improvement Department Manager Jackie Magyar, who developed the service. "This program is free to beneficiaries and does not affect their benefits or other services that they may be receiving. It also provides a safe environment for those with diabetes and allows them to share how their disease affects their lives and share with others going through the same thing."

The diabetes support group is held twice a month and is open to beneficiaries and family members. Up to 15 people can participate per session. Participants call a toll-free number to join in the discussion and will be provided with information prior to the beginning of the session.

Kaye Kuntz-Igoa, a dietician and certified diabetes educator at TriWest, facilitates the program that allows participants to speak openly and honestly. “Many participants in the support group let us know that they are happy and consoled to know they do not have to work alone to make adjustments to stay healthy when they have diabetes,” Kaye says.

“They often tell me they wouldn’t miss the support group for anything and really look forward to the days when they can call in to join the rest of the group.”

Support group meetings may even include guest speakers.
